    Fire pump test connections are designed to provide a means to flow test UL/FM fire pumps to meet both NFPA 20 requirements for field acceptance tests, and NFPA 25 requirements for annual pump tests.     A Forward Flow Connection is designed to assist in meeting NFPA 13 and NFPA 25 requirements as it relates to conducting a backflow preventer forward flow test. NFPA 25 requires that backflow preventers be flowed annually at system demand including hose streams where hydrants or hose stations are located downstream of the backflow preventer.

    Jockey Pump or pressure maintenance/make-up pumps are intended to be used in conjunction with UL/FM fire pumps to maintain system pressure without requiring the fire pump to run. Sizing of the jockey pump is based on an analysis of the type and size of the system. As an example, a fire protection system with a large amount of underground piping would generally require a larger capacity jockey pump to make-up for NFPA24 allowable leakage.

    A "Rule of Thumb" which has been used to size jockey pumps is 1% of rated GPM flow of the associated fire pump with a pressure equivalent to approximately churn the pressure of the associated fire pump with less supply pressure. Another recommendation is to select a pump that will make up the allowable leakage rate in 10 minutes or 1GPM, whichever is larger.
